Today I want to tell you about one of my favourite products for card colouring: Copic markers. If you’re looking to add depth, dimension, and a professional finish to your projects, these alcohol-based markers are truly a game changer.

Esta es, sin duda, mi técnica preferida. Puedo pasar horas experimentando con luces y sombras para conseguir ese efecto dramático que tanto me gusta. En esta tarjeta, por ejemplo, he representado una escena nocturna en la que las velas de un pastel de cumpleaños iluminan una habitación oscura, justo cuando un ratoncito sopla las llamas. El contraste entre la luz de las velas y la oscuridad del entorno crea una atmósfera mágica.

The idea is to start by applying dark tones to the areas where the light doesn’t reach, then gradually blend with mid-tones until you reach the lightest point, which should remain as clean as possible or be coloured with very soft tones like Y00 or even the colourless blender. You can also start with the lighter tones and adjust with darker ones if you need to correct any details, since dark shades easily cover up mistakes.
La idea es aplicar primero los tonos oscuros en las zonas donde no llega la luz e ir suavizando con colores intermedios hasta llegar al punto de luz que debe mantenerse lo más limpio posible o coloreado con tonos muy suaves como Y00 o el blender incoloro. También puedes comenzar desde los tonos suaves e ir ajustando con los oscuros si necesitas corregir algún detalle, ya que los tonos intensos pueden cubrir los errores.

To make it look more realistic, I like to use warm colours like yellows or oranges close to the light source, and cool tones like blues, greys, or purples for the shadows. The most important thing is to imagine where the light is coming from and let that area breathe—don’t overwork it. It’s a very expressive technique and perfect for telling visual stories through your cards.
Para lograr un efecto más realista, me gusta usar colores cálidos como amarillos o naranjas cerca de la fuente de luz y tonos fríos como azules, grises o violetas para las sombras. Lo más importante es imaginar de dónde viene la luz y dejar que esa zona respire sin cubrirla demasiado. Es una técnica muy expresiva y perfecta para contar historias visuales en tus tarjetas.

About Copics | Sobre los Copics
I discovered Copics a while ago, and since then, I haven’t stopped colouring with them and watching tutorials to improve my technique, especially in colour blending and working with different types of images, from flowers and characters to backgrounds. One of my biggest references has been Sandy Allnock, both through her online courses and her free tutorials on YouTube, which have been essential in my learning process.
Descubrí los Copic hace ya algún tiempo y, desde entonces, no he parado de colorear con ellos y de ver tutoriales para mejorar la técnica, sobre todo en la combinación de colores y en diferentes tipos de imágenes, desde flores y personajes hasta fondos. Una de mis grandes referencias es Sandy Allnock, tanto en sus cursos como en sus tutoriales gratuitos en YouTube, que han sido fundamentales para mi aprendizaje.
One of the things I love most about these markers is the brush tip, which offers great control and allows you to colour in fine details as well as apply soft shading. On top of that, the blending between colours is super smooth, they’re incredibly versatile, perfect for all kinds of projects, they’re refillable and have replaceable nibs, making them a long-term investment, and they come in a massive range of over 350 colours.
Una de las cosas que más me encanta de estos rotuladores es la punta tipo pincel, que ofrece un mayor control y permite tanto colorear detalles como aplicar un sombreado suave. Además, el difuminado entre colores es muy fluido, son increíblemente versátiles, sirven para cualquier tipo de proyecto, son recargables y con puntas reemplazables, lo que los convierte en una inversión a largo plazo, y tienen una gama de colores enorme con más de 350 tonos disponibles.
It’s true they’re not cheap, but as I mentioned, since they’re refillable, you don’t need to buy a new marker when it runs out: just the ink refill.
Es cierto que no son económicos, pero como ya comenté, al ser recargables no es necesario comprar el rotulador completo otra vez, solo el recambio de tinta cuando se agota.
If you’re just getting started, I recommend using shades from the same colour family, like E30, E31, and E33, as this will make blending much easier. And don’t forget to use paper designed for alcohol-based markers. For cardmaking, Neenah Solar White cardstock works really well, as do brands like Spellbinders and Hero Arts. Comic pads, like the one from Sakura, also give great results. It’s generally recommended to store your markers horizontally to keep the ink evenly distributed, although I keep mine upright and haven’t had any issues so far.
Si estás empezando, te recomiendo comenzar con colores de la misma familia, como E30, E31 y E33, ya que así el difuminado se vuelve más sencillo. Y no olvides usar papel especial para rotuladores con base de alcohol. En tarjetería, la cartulina Neenah Solar White funciona muy bien, al igual que marcas como Spellbinders o Hero Arts. También los blocs de papel para cómic, como el de Sakura, dan muy buen resultado. Se aconseja guardarlos en posición horizontal para que la tinta se mantenga equilibrada, aunque en mi caso los tengo en posición vertical y, hasta ahora, no he tenido ningún problema.
